George Steinmetz/ASA / ASA, Persepolis; the ceremonial capital of ancient Persia; was begun around 500 BC by Darius the Great.; This world heritage site; one of the greatest of ancient cities; was developed under the Shah into an enormous park for visitors; with four helipads and an tour bus parking lot the size of a football field.; But the site was strangely devoid of visitors.; I saw more guards there than tourists and was told that with the current political situation only about 50 people (Iranian and foreign combined) visit Persepolis each day.; After Esfahan; it is the second most visited tourist site in Iran. |
